Biography & Equipment

My interest in photography was really cemented after loosing a compact 35mm film camera approx 25 years ago. I decided to replace it with a Minolta 300 and attend an evening class for "Photography for Beginners" at Whitwood Tech. where I was introduced to processing & printing monochrome.
I acquired a Paterson enlarger and darkroom equipment from Dave Burgess and set about tackling processing film & printing in a blacked out kitchen at home. I later moved into the bathroom. I joined Pontefract Camera Club in approx 1985 and persuaded Dave to join. I replaced the Paterson with an old Gamer enlarger selling the Paterson to Joe Lyman. About 12 years ago I had the rear of my garage modified and a purpose built dark room/utility room built. I was still a monochrome worker until about 8 years ago when I bought from Dave Burgess a Canon 30D SLR digital camera, an Epson 1270 printer etc. and dipped my toe into colour. 18 months ago I bought an Apple i-Mac and now have an Epson 2400 printer. After having used compact digital cameras for most of my work I now have a Nikon D300.

Most of my work is pictorial, mainly rural landscape which was the reason why I began using a compact. Fell walking and carrying an SLR (and at one time a Mamiya 645 with tripod !) was too cumbersome. However I am now lugging my Nikon about usually with a Manfrotto monopod.

Inspirations

I suppose like many, Ansel Adams' work has inspired me.
I also particularly like the monochrome work of Cumbrian photographer David Herrod.
